ANDERSON CAMPAIGN:  Baldwin, Johnson, and Pocan fail to defend the First Amendment

Middleton, Wisconsin – November 6th 2023 – Phil Anderson, Libertarian candidate for the United States Senate in Wisconsin, is calling out Senators Tammy Baldwin and Ron Johnson, as well as Rep Mark Pocan, for failing to defend the First Amendment. All three have not signed a bipartisan, bicameral letter calling on the Biden Administration to end its persecution of publisher Julian Assange.

“By failing to speak out, and by declining to sign the letter circulating through Congress, these three have sided with the federal government’s desire to keep secrets from the American people, and sided against the First Amendment which guarantees free speech and freedom of the press’” Anderson declared. “Assange is a brave journalist and publisher, and not a threat to anyone except those in government who have secrets to hide”.

Assange is an Australian who founded WikiLeaks, a non-profit organization that publishes leaked materials from a wide range of sources. Assange rose to prominence in 2010 when WikiLeaks published a series of leaks by Chelsea Manning, a former US Army soldier. The leaks contained proof of torture and crimes committed by the US military and others. The Obama administration declined to pursue Assange on espionage charges, and acknowledged that what was published was true. The Trump administration reversed course, and charged Assange with espionage, requesting his extradition to the US. The Biden administration has continued the persecution.

“Obviously, persecuting a journalist for publishing the truth has a chilling effect on the freedom of the press, and degrades Americans’ ability to know the truth about what the government is doing,” continues Anderson. “Just as obviously, these representatives could act in favor of freedom, or at least add their voices to the choir of freedom lovers but have repeatedly declined to do so. Whose side are they on?”
