ANDERSON CAMPAIGN: Help us contact Congress to fight for Free Speech
Middleton, Wisconsin – February 13th 2024– Phil Anderson, Libertarian candidate for the United States Senate in Wisconsin, is hosting a postcard mailing event to fight against the persecution and extradition of Julian Assange to the United States.
“Our representatives in Congress, including Tammy Baldwin, Ron Johnson, and Mark Pocan, have failed to stand up for the people’s right to know what their government is doing,” Anderson declared. “Assange is a brave journalist and publisher, and not a threat to anyone except those in government who have secrets to hide”.
Assange is an Australian who founded WikiLeaks, a non-profit organization that publishes leaked materials from a wide range of sources. Assange rose to prominence in 2010 when WikiLeaks published a series of leaks by Chelsea Manning, a former US Army soldier. The leaks contained proof of torture and crimes committed by the US military and others. The Obama administration declined to pursue Assange on espionage charges, and acknowledged that what was published was true. The Trump administration reversed course, and charged Assange with espionage, requesting his extradition to the US. The Biden administration has continued the persecution.
“I have protested at Tammy Baldwin’s office, called the offices of Baldwin, Johnson, and Pocan, as have countless others, imploring them to stand up for the people they represent, to no avail,” continues Anderson. “We’ll send postcards, keep calling, keep demonstrating until justice is served. Their silence begs the question: whose side are they on?”
The event will be held at Mother Fool’s Coffee House, 1101 Williamson St in Madison, from 2-4:30pm on Thursday February 15th. People are encouraged to bring their own return address labels, if possible. Postcards will be mailed to all members of the House of Representatives, begging them to support H. Res. 934, which if passed would oppose the Department of Justice attempt to extradite Julian Assange to the US. Assange’s next, and possibly final, extradition hearing is set for February 20-21 in London.
